Each year in June, Member States
elect the President of the General Assembly to preside over the next session of
the United Nations main deliberative body. The President guides the Assembly's
work during the session, which starts in September, on such issues as
poverty, education, disarmament, human rights, the environment and
strengthening of the Organization.
